Homecoming night
Tone stepped out of her house knowing very well what she was facing. The big hill. Tonight was the night of the homecoming dance but seeing as she didn't have a date or any other plans she managed to create a distraction so grand there was a possibility it would literally sweep her of her feet. "Let's go bean, we got this." As if Roller Skating down a long steep hill wasn't enough she needed to take it up a couple of notches, the first was attire, the second was destination. Admittedly there was only one way to their destination, and that was down the steep grade, so wanting to skate to the local gas station was what pushed through the logic. "Why not put on the Roller Skates after a nice walk to the bottom? Because when you don't have a date to homecoming there is a need for something exciting to fill the void. Tone's parents didn't feel it was necessary to throw out any items they considered useful, this resulted in everything they had acquired over time being slowly transferred to their basement. Some might see this as hording, Bean, Tone and their gang saw this as a treasure hunt. Thankfully they would not have to ride with out style, but instead they were threaded with correctly period pieced clothing, straight out of the 60's and 80's. To add a more dramatic effect they applied make-up, this could be questioned for accuracy. Tone loved the rush of wind in her hair as she skated down the hill, feeling the vibration underneath her feet, and the sound of wheels over gravel. She felt invincible dressed as someone else and doing something which sent her heart racing outside of her body. But now she was beginning to go too fast, and starting to question this decision. This is something teenagers do, they think of ridiculously fabulous ideas, and then wonder why they ended up following through with it. Thankfully teenagers also carry something called "teen luck" it's a combination of all their parent's prayers and the earth feeling sorry for their stupidity. And so she caught it, her way out of danger. "Grass", well weeds actually, she skated straight into the weeds paralleling the image of "a runaway truck" onto their designated ramp. Thankfully Bean, who was trailing behind also used this method. After this they decided to side step their way down the hill among the weeds. Why stop at one genius idea when you can continue onto the other? So they skated on to the local gas station, "River's Edge". The ride was a little longer than Tone thought it would be, but when they arrived she was pretty excited at their accomplishment. Her and Bean took their change out to buy their typical fruit chew candy when the second consequence of their ridiculously fabulous idea came into view. Danger, danger people, wait not just people, but peers in ball gowns entering the building. They were not the only ones who had decided to dress up and go to the gas station tonight. Sometimes in life there are "runaway truck ramps" and sometimes there is no where to run, this is your parents saying "you are having a natural consequence", or the earth's way of laughing in your face. Standing at the counter in their once hip clothes turned costumes, they stood slack jawed at the beautiful girls coming into the gas station dressed immaculately and accompanied by their dates. (Dates: guys who take you places, and talk to you because they want to.) Ah, the bite and sting of reality hurt as they watched their peers looking back at them with laughing eyes and snickering lips, leaving with their purchases, and DATES. Tone and Bean didn't talk much on the skate back, mostly they now worried at the realization that they could be seen, and re-planning the route back that would have normally taken them past the High school. Once the two juvenile girls were back to Tone's home, their safety secured and settled on the couch, something sweet crept into Tone's heart it was the feeling of owning something that nobody else did. She and Bean had a ridiculously fabulous night. She began to laugh and it transferred to Bean like a little kid transfers lice.
"Something that hurt yesterday can make you smile today."
